Karatsu Castle anchors one half of the choice. Rooms within reach of the castle put the Kawamura Art Museum and the Sakura no Baba Site on the same walk, which suits you if the city's built heritage is the reason for coming. The Sakura no Baba Site and the Kawamura Art Museum belong to the same short list of city addresses, which is why a castle-side base does most of the work on a short stay.
It is the compact half. Karatsu covers a wide stretch of Saga Prefecture, so the distance between the castle quarter and the outer reaches of the city is a real consideration when picking a bed. The other half runs toward the Nabatake Site and Matsurokan, where the record of the ancient port trading with China and Korea is kept rather than built.

The name is the oldest document Karatsu holds. 唐 kara and 津 tsu combine to mean a port, and the compound records the city's standing as an ancient trading harbour linking Japan with China and Korea. Dangjin, in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, is written with the same two characters. Trade left a mark before stone did.
The Nabatake Site and the Sakura no Baba Site are the excavated ground where that earlier occupation is read. Matsurokan sits alongside them on the city's list. Karatsu Castle gives the city its standing landmark, and it is the one piece of the record that can be seen from a distance rather than read out of a trench. 唐津町 is the form the town took on the municipal register in 1889, and the city that grew from it covers a broad stretch of Saga Prefecture on Kyushu.
