About Tsukiji
What are the main landmarks in Tsukiji?
Tsukiji's sightseeing runs through its museums. The National Film Archive of Japan and the Police Museum stand among the Chūō blocks around Tsukiji, with the Mitsuo Aida Museum, the Ad Museum Tokyo, and the Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art also within reach. What is the history of Tsukiji?
The name means reclaimed land. Crews filled this stretch of Tokyo Bay beside the Sumida River during the 18th century, in the Edo period, and the made ground has carried the district ever since. Tsukiji fish market opened in 1935.
It closed in 2018, when trading moved out to Toyosu Market, leaving the outer lanes and their shops behind.
