The scholars and painters of Gangneung were known across Korea, and their house and pavilions still stand by the lake and the shore. The town kept its old rites through the ages. Its Dano festival, held in early summer with mask plays and shaman rites, has been kept for centuries and is honoured the world over.
Then the games came here. In the last decade Gangneung built great arenas on its plain for the ice events of the winter Olympics, drawing the world to the coast, while its beaches and coffee shops filled with visitors. The pines still line the shore.
