Where you stay in Seogwipo turns on the harbour town or the coast. The streets above the old harbour keep the waterfalls, the markets, and the sea cliffs within reach, and staying in town suits anyone here for the south coast. Fishing boats fill the little port.
Guesthouses climb the harbour hills. Out along the shore toward the resorts and beaches, the coast opens to hotels and gardens. A room by the sea trades the harbour for the black-sand coves, the golf greens, and the cliffs of columned rock.
Palms line the coastal road. Stay in town for the falls and market, or on the coast for the beaches. Hallasan rises behind it all.

The blue sea breaks on the rocks. Tangerine trees cover the warm slopes.
What are the main landmarks in Seogwipo?
Jeongbang Falls drops straight into the sea at Seogwipo. The broad white cascade, one of few in Asia to fall right onto the shore, pours over a cliff into the waves, the emblem of the coast, east of the harbour. Basalt columns rise from the water.
The Jusangjeolli cliffs stand in ranks of black hexagons along the shore, while Cheonjiyeon Falls and the tangerine farms fill the hills above Seogwipo.
What is the history of Seogwipo?
Seogwipo grew slowly on a far southern isle. For most of its history Jeju was a place apart, a kingdom of its own called Tamna that paid tribute to the mainland kings, and its people lived by the sea and the volcanic soil. The women took to the water.
For centuries the haenyeo, the diving women of Jeju, gathered shellfish and seaweed from the cold seabed without air, a craft handed down from mother to daughter. The island knew hard and bitter years. Under later rule Jeju was a place of exile, and in the last century a terrible uprising and its crushing scarred the island deeply.
Then the warm coast drew visitors. In our own age Seogwipo grew as a resort of waterfalls, gardens, and citrus farms, and the south of Jeju filled with travellers from the mainland and beyond. The falls still drop to the sea.

Seogwipo lies on the south coast of Jeju Island in South Korea, below the peak of Hallasan. The city spreads along a shore of black volcanic rock and small islands, on slopes of orchards that climb toward the mountain, warmed by the southern sea. Green volcanic hills rise inland.

What is the climate of Seogwipo?
Seogwipo has a warm, humid subtropical climate, the mildest in Korea. Warm, wet summers bring the monsoon rains and the odd typhoon off the sea, and mild winters rarely freeze, so palms and citrus grow in the open here. Sea winds soften every season.

How do you get to Seogwipo?
Seogwipo lies on the south coast of Jeju, over the island from Jeju City. Buses cross the island from Jeju City airport over the flanks of Hallasan, and the coast road rings the shore past the waterfalls. Ferries and flights link Jeju to the mainland.
