Bambalapitiya puts the sea on one side and the city on the other, with Galle Road running the length of it and Marine Drive closer to the water. It is walkable and central. Kollupitiya lies north and Wellawatte south, so the neighbourhood sits in the middle of Colombo's coastal strip rather than at either end of it.

Majestic City is the commercial anchor, a seven-storey shopping complex standing with Pearl Grand Town on the same ground. Schools give the neighbourhood its other character. Colombo Hindu College, St. Peter's College, Holy Family Convent, Muslim Ladies College, Ramanathan Hindu Ladies' College, and St. Paul's Girls School are all here, and the Informatics Institute of Technology is among several colleges that make Bambalapitiya an education quarter.
What is the history of Bambalapitiya?
Bambalapitiya's shape comes from Galle Road, the artery that runs south out of Colombo along the coast, and the neighbourhood grew as a strip either side of it. Schools followed the road. The concentration of colleges and schools along and behind it is what gave the area its standing as an education hub, and Milagiriya is the older name still attached to part of that ground.
Where is Bambalapitiya?
Bambalapitiya runs along the southern coast of Colombo with the Indian Ocean on its western side. Havelock Town lies east. Kollupitiya bounds it north and Wellawatte south, and the neighbourhood falls inside the Kollupitiya ward of the Colombo Municipal Council, with the A2 highway and Marine Drive both running parallel to the shore.
