What is the history of Fort?
A founding year was never written down for Fort. Fort enters the written record through the British colonial era, when the Galle Face Green Promenade was built along its foreshore in 1859 under Sir Henry George Ward, the Governor of Ceylon. Ceylon was the island's colonial name.
The Colombo Stock Exchange, the Bank of Ceylon headquarters and the General Post Office later gathered into the same few streets, giving the district a second role as the financial centre of Colombo.
