What is the history of Kollupitiya?
The name predates the shops. Kollupitiya takes it from a chief of Kandy who tried and failed to dethrone the last king of Kandy, and the name stuck to this stretch of Colombo instead. Dutch and British administrations followed.
Under them a brewery opened here to convert coconut treacle into liquor, and it kept working through both periods before the shopping malls and embassies took over the ground.
