Bayanzürkh, Ulan Bator — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Bayanzürkh is a district of Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, stretching east across the low ground beyond the city centre.

About Bayanzürkh

Where to stay in Bayanzürkh

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Bayanzürkh sits away from the tourist core of Ulan Bator. Hotels here are fewer. Stays run to smaller guesthouses, serviced flats and roadside hotels along the main routes into the district, rather than the grand lobbies found downtown, so this east side suits you if you arrive by car or want quieter nights close to the eastern approaches.

Rooms come cheaper the further out you go. Public transport links the district to the centre, though the walk to the city's central squares and museums is not a short one.

About Bayanzürkh

What are the main landmarks in Bayanzürkh?

Bayanzürkh is a lived-in, working part of Ulan Bator rather than a museum quarter. Its draw is everyday. Long market rows, apartment blocks and the busy avenues that thread east out of the capital give the district its texture, and much of local life turns around its shops, transport depots and the schools that serve the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Grassland begins where the streets end. Many visitors pass through on the way east, since the roads leaving Ulan Bator for the wider country run straight across the district.

What is the history of Bayanzürkh?

Bayanzürkh took shape as one of the districts of Ulan Bator in 1965, when the growing capital was divided into administrative parts. It grew fast. Herders and rural families moving towards the city settled on its eastern edge, first in the felt tents of the ger districts and later in the blocks of flats that spread along the main roads.

The district drew its name from a nearby height. As Ulan Bator pushed outward through the later part of the century, Bayanzürkh filled much of the ground between the old core and the open steppe.

Where is Bayanzürkh?

Bayanzürkh spreads east from the heart of Ulan Bator, taking in some of the flatter, lower ground of the capital. Its streets run east. Past its edges the district gives way to open country, and its outer fringes reach towards Nalaikh, the smaller district set apart to the south-east among the hills that ring the capital.

To the west it meets the central ground of the city. Songino Khairkhan lies away to the west and Sükhbaatar to the north, the three of them wrapping the core of Ulan Bator between the surrounding grassland.
