Nalaikh sits apart from central Ulan Bator, a quiet former mining district out toward the eastern hills of Mongolia. Nalaikh carries only a handful of rooms. Most travellers who stay do so near the old town core around the Nalaikh Coal Mine, or use the district as a staging point on the road toward the Terelj holiday area east of the capital.
Pick the town core for the mining heritage, or the Terelj road for the open country beyond. The steppe begins close by.

What are the main landmarks in Nalaikh?
The Nalaikh Coal Mine defines the district. Its Kapitalnaya shaft, the deep working that once drove the town, still marks the ground at the heart of Nalaikh among the residential quarters of Shokhoi and Arjanchivlan. The Terelj holiday area lies beyond the eastern edge, a draw for visitors leaving the capital.
A rail branch runs by Khonkhor toward the Trans-Mongolian Railway. Coal shaped it all.
What is the history of Nalaikh?
Nalaikh grew from coal. The Nalaikh Coal Mine was the first such working in Mongolia, and the district built up around it as pits opened and workers settled the ground east of Ulan Bator. Its Kapitalnaya shaft became the deep mainstay of the field, and the railway that ran the coal westward tied the town to the capital and later to the Trans-Mongolian Railway by Khonkhor.
When the mine wound down, the district stayed. The seams still name the place.
