The prewar streets are the point. Rooms in the old part of Muar put the coffee shops, the food and the buildings that predate the war within walking distance, and they sit close to the Muar Art Gallery and the Thames World Art Gallery too. Saint Andrew's Catholic Church stands in the town.
Trinity Presbyterian Church Muar gives it a second church of note, and a stay in the old streets covers most of what Muar is visited for without a car. Bakri holds the newer township. Development moved out to the Bakri area, which gives Muar a second centre with later building stock and easier parking, though it trades away the river and the old grid in exchange.
Nothing in Muar sits far away. Donhu Jurassic Garden answers the question of what to do with children, and either side of the town reaches it without much driving. Sungai Muar sets the boundary.
Muar District covers the ground south of the river while Tangkak district takes everything beyond it, so a room booked north of the water is administratively somewhere else even when it feels like the same town. Locals ignore the line. Both districts are still spoken of together as Muar, which matters mainly when a booking address fails to match the name people use for the area.

Muar draws visitors for its kitchens, its coffee and the prewar buildings that still line the older streets, and the town carries all of that alongside the standing of a royal capital. Bandar Maharani means Empress Town. Johor declared Muar its royal town in 2012, confirming a role the town already held in principle, and the Sultan of Johor keeps a palace here even while living mainly in Johor Bahru.

What is the history of Muar?
Muar dates from 1885. The town was laid out under the name Bandar Maharani, which translates as Empress Town, and that name still runs alongside Muar in ordinary use rather than having been replaced by it. Buildings from before the war survive.
Those prewar streets are much of the reason people travel here, together with the food and the coffee the town is known for across Malaysia. Royal status came formally in 2012. Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar declared Muar the royal town of Johor on the fifth of February that year, which put a title on a standing the town already carried as the de jure royal capital.
A palace remains in the town. The Sultan of Johor keeps it, though Johor Bahru takes most of his time, so the royal role in Muar is a formal one rather than a daily presence. The map changed around it.
Muar District once covered the whole area up to the Malacca boundary, but the upgrading of Tangkak from a sub-district to a full district cut that in two along Sungai Muar, leaving Muar District with the ground south of the river. The name outlived the split. Both districts are called Muar by the people who live in them, and the newer township at Bakri sits inside that same shared idea of where Muar is.

Sungai Muar runs through the picture. The town stands on the river of the same name in Peninsular Malaysia, with Muar District holding the country south of the water and Tangkak district taking the northern side towards the old Malacca boundary. Bakri holds the new township.
Muar counts as the fourth largest urban area in Johor and the second biggest town of the state.
What is the climate of Muar?
Consistent heat defines the year here. Muar lies in the tropical belt of Peninsular Malaysia, where the calendar divides into wetter and drier stretches instead of into seasons, and the difference shows in how much rain reaches the river country rather than in the thermometer. Air off Sungai Muar keeps the old streets close and damp for much of the year, and shade matters more than shelter from any cold.
How do you get to Muar?
Roads bring nearly everyone. Muar stands on the run between the Malacca boundary and the rest of Johor, so arrivals from Johor Bahru and from the north come along the same road corridor rather than through any terminal of the town's own. The river crossing matters.
Anything on the far bank of Sungai Muar belongs to Tangkak district, so drivers heading that way leave Muar District at the water even though the name follows them across.
