What is the history of Iskandar Puteri?
The area of Iskandar Puteri was once mostly fishing villages of Malays and Orang Laut, known as Sempit Puteri, the narrow princess, because it faced the narrowest point of the Tebrau Strait. In 1855 Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim moved his capital to Tanjung Puteri and named it Iskandar Puteri, a name his son Abu Bakar replaced with Johor Bahru in 1868. A story told by the Johor Heritage Foundation gives Gelang Patah its name, broken paddle: the paddle of the sampan carrying Jaafar Muhammad, the first Menteri Besar of Johor, broke on his way to Sempit Puteri.
Eight local councils set up in the 1950s and 1960s merged in 1978 into the Johor Bahru Tengah District Council, which gained municipal status in 2001. In 1993 the plan for a second bridge to Singapore went ahead, and the developer UEM built the township of Nusajaya on land along it, a name given by the Menteri Besar Muhyiddin Yassin. The Johor State Legislative Assembly moved to Kota Iskandar in 2008.
Sultan Ibrahim revived the name in 2015. On 22 November 2017 the western part of Johor Bahru Tengah became Iskandar Puteri City, and its council became the Iskandar Puteri City Council, headed by a mayor.
Where is Iskandar Puteri?
Iskandar Puteri is continental Eurasia's southernmost city. It shares the Johor Bahru District with the adjacent cities of Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang. The industrial area of Tanjung Kupang lies in the west of the city, and UEM developed the Southern Industrial and Logistics Cluster, a green industrial park for technology, food and logistics firms.
