What is the history of Bharatpur?
Bharatpur grew on the edge of the jungle. Not long ago the Terai below the hills was thick forest, ridden with malaria and roamed by tigers, and the Tharu people alone lived and farmed at its edge. The jungle was cleared and settled.
When the malaria was beaten in the last century, settlers poured down from the hills to farm the rich Terai land, and a town grew by the Narayani where the roads crossed. The old jungle was saved as a park. To save the last rhinos and tigers, the kingdom made the forest by the river a great national park, the first in the land, and the animals came back to its grasslands and sal woods.
The town rose beside the park. Bharatpur grew fast into a busy city of hospitals and schools by the Narayani, the base for the safaris of Chitwan, keeping its river, its jungle, and its wildlife. The rhinos still graze the grasslands.
