Nowy Sącz was founded as a royal town of the mountains. In 1292 a Bohemian king chartered the town in the Beskid basin, and the Polish kings after him gave it walls, a castle, and rich privileges as a guard on the road to Hungary. The town grew rich on trade.
Wine, cloth, and metal passed through Nowy Sącz between Poland and the south, and its merchants and guilds filled the great market square. Art and faith flourished in the valley. The town raised a Gothic basilica and drew painters whose golden panels became famous as the school of Nowy Sącz, kept now in its museum.
War struck hard in the last century. The castle was blown up and the old Jewish town, once half the city, was destroyed, but the market square and the churches came through. The old castle ruins still stand by the river.
