What are the main landmarks in Biskupin?

Biskupin's landmarks gather along its western edge, where the district meets the Wrocław Exhibition Grounds. The Wrocław Zoological Garden draws the most visitors, and its Africarium wing leads them through aquaria of African river and reef life. Next to the grounds stands Centennial Hall, a reinforced-concrete dome from the early twentieth century, with the steel Iglica needle in front of it and the curved colonnade of the Pergola wrapped around a pond behind.

Its dome holds a UNESCO listing. The Four Domes Pavilion alongside now shows modern art, while further north the Olympic Stadium and the modernist houses of the Workplace and House Exhibition round out the district's sights.

What is the history of Biskupin?

Biskupin took shape as a garden suburb of Breslau, the German name Wrocław carried before 1945. Villas came first. Its ordered streets filled out through the early twentieth century, and the modernist rows of the Workplace and House Exhibition were added in 1929.

Centennial Hall, on the exhibition grounds next door, had gone up earlier, in 1913. When the city passed from Germany to Poland after the war, Biskupin kept its low houses and gardens and settled into one of Wrocław's residential districts.

Where is Biskupin?

Biskupin lies on the eastern side of Wrocław, on the Wielka Wyspa that the Oder and its old arm, the Stara Odra, wrap on almost every side. Sępolno and Zalesie adjoin it to the north. The Wrocław Exhibition Grounds close off its western end, and the river greenery runs through the rest.
