Chełm rose on its chalk hill in the borderlands. An old town of the frontier between Poland and Rus, it was for a time the seat of a Ruthenian prince and the capital of a chalk-rich land, and Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews long shared its streets. The people mined the white hill.
For centuries they dug chalk from under the town for building and lime, until the diggings spread into a maze of tunnels beneath the streets. Faith raised a great church on the height. On the chalk hill above the town the bishops built a soaring Baroque basilica, once a cathedral of the Uniate and Orthodox churches, that still crowns the skyline.
The town gathered a gentle legend. In Jewish humour Chełm became the town of lovable fools whose foolish wisdom fills a hundred tales. The old tunnels still wind under the market.
