What is the history of Suwałki?
Suwałki grew in an empty borderland. The far northeast was long a wild land of forest and lake, the land once of the Yotvingian people and later left almost empty, until monks of Wigry cleared and settled it. A town rose under the tsars.
Under Russian rule Suwałki became the seat of a governorate, laid out in a broad grid of streets, and it drew Poles, Jews, Lithuanians, and Old Believers to its market. The lakes made the region famous. Around the town lie hundreds of glacial lakes, deep and cold and clear, among them the deepest lake in all Poland, drawing anglers and canoeists to the water.
A poet came from the town. Maria Konopnicka, one of Poland's much-loved writers, was born in Suwałki, and the town honors her still. The town spread into a busy market of the lakeland, keeping its grid streets, its lakes, and its clean cold air.
