What is the history of Bratsk?
Bratsk began as a Cossack fort. Long ago a wooden stockade stood on the Angara to hold the frontier of Siberia, and for centuries only a small village lived by the great river in the forest. Then the planners came.
In the Soviet years the state chose the Angara for a giant dam, and young workers poured in from across the country to raise it in the taiga. The dam remade the land. Its wall rose across the river, the waters backed up into a sea that drowned the old valley, and a new city grew in pieces around the shore.
Power drew the factories. On the cheap current of the dam rose a great aluminium works and timber mills, and Bratsk swelled into an industrial city of the far taiga, keeping its dam, its reservoir, and its forests. The turbines still hum by the water.
