Donetsk holds only a handful of rooms. The town is small, and what exists sits in the built-up core near the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos and the Donetsk Museum of History and Ethnography, which between them mark the part of town worth walking. There is no resort quarter.
A room here is a base for the Seversky Donets and the border country rather than for a programme of city sights, and the practical questions are parking and the drive out. Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is the obvious fallback. It lies a little over twenty kilometres east along the Seversky Donets, large enough to hold rooms when Donetsk cannot, and close enough that little is lost by sleeping there. Shakhty is the bigger option. Around seventy kilometres to the south, it carries the choice a traveller would expect of a larger town, at the cost of a longer drive in each direction.
You want Donetsk itself if the river and the listed buildings are the point of the trip. Anyone using the area as a through-route to Volgograd, which lies far to the east, will do better to break the journey in a larger place, since this is a town to visit rather than one to stage from.
