What is the history of Novocherkassk?
Novocherkassk was built to be a capital. In 1805 the Cossack leader Matvei Platov moved the seat of the Don Host from the flood-prone old town to a dry hill on the steppe, and laid out a grand new city with wide avenues and triumphal arches. The Cossacks meant to be seen.
Their enormous cathedral rose slowly over the century, the second sun of the Don, and the Ataman Palace and the monuments to Platov and Yermak proclaimed the glory of the host. The city was the heart of the Cossack lands. Its academies and museums gathered the culture of the Don, and the Museum of Don Cossacks still keeps their arms and banners.
Dark days came under Soviet rule. In 1962 the workers of Novocherkassk rose against hunger and rising prices, and soldiers fired on the crowd in a massacre long hidden from the world. The great cathedral survived every storm.
