What are the main landmarks in Herrhagen?

Herrhagskyrkan and Herrhagsskolan stand by the district's small square. The school was finished in 1907. It was among the first in Sweden with electric light.

The old foundry now houses many of Karlstad's cultural associations, with the Nöjesfabriken nightclub in its southern part, and the round brick water tower of 1889 can be seen from far off. Karlstads domkyrka and the Värmlands Museum lie a short walk to the north-west, and the old steamer S/S Polstjärnan and the tug Bogserbåten Tingvalla to the south-east.

What is the history of Herrhagen?

From the 16th century to the middle of the 19th the ground was mostly pasture, part of Carlberg, the manor of Charles IX. Industry came first. Among it was Karlstad Mekaniska Werkstad, so workers filled the nearest houses and Herrhagen was known as a working-class district.

The town plan of 1898 laid out the street grid still seen in the district. After the homes were renovated in the 1960s, a square was built beside Herrhagsskolan, and in 1972 Herrhagskyrkan rose on it.

Where is Herrhagen?

Herrhagen lies just east of the centre of Karlstad, framed by the Pråmkanalen canal, the Hagaleden road and Lambergstjärnet. Its streets follow a strict grid. Green space is scarce.
