What is the history of Dnipro?
Dnipro traces its founding to 1776, when the city rose on the right bank of the Dnieper as Katerynoslav, a planned seat for the southern steppe. Broad avenues were drawn across the slopes above the water. The church of St. Catherine dates from those first decades, and the Milestone of Katerynoslav still marks the old survey, when the town was laid out to command the great river and the grain lands around it.
River trade and then heavy industry turned Katerynoslav into a working metropolis that drew rail lines and factories to the banks of the Dnieper. Scholars of the steppe such as Dmytro Yavornytskyi built its great collections, held in the Dmytro Yavornytsky National Historical Museum and the House-Museum of Dmytro Yavornytskyi that keeps his name. The city was renamed Dnipropetrovsk in the twentieth century, then took the shorter name Dnipro, drawn from the river that runs through it.
