What are the main landmarks in Tsentralnyi Raion?

Tsentralnyi Raion holds Kherson's historic core. St. Catherine's Cathedral, built of local sandstone between 1781 and 1786 at Perekopska Street 13, was the first stone church in the city. The Kherson Nature Museum occupies the two-storey building put up for it in 1906 at Teatralna Street 5, and the Kherson Literature Museum takes number 1 on the same street.

Budynok Vitvytskoho closes that row at number 14, a house of the late 19th century whose corner carries an oriel under a dome. The Monument to John Howard stands on Prospekt Nezalezhnosti, eleven metres high and crowned by an obelisk whose face works as a sundial.

What is the history of Tsentralnyi Raion?

Tsentralnyi Raion was created on 4 January 1965 as Suvorovskyi Raion, named for Alexander Suvorov, who directed the building of the Kherson Fortress. The name held fifty-eight years. On 16 October 2023 the Kherson city military administration renamed the raion Tsentralnyi.

Its main avenue followed eight days later, when Prospekt Ushakova became Prospekt Nezalezhnosti. That avenue had been Hovardivska Street from 1890, for John Howard, the English prison reformer who died of typhus in Kherson in 1790. The Suvorov bust and the Ushakov monument were already gone, carried off by Russian forces in October 2022.

Tsentralnyi Raion runs from the Dnipro bank at Kherson north past the Kherson railway station to the village of Stepanivka. The historic centre sits at its river end.
