Shumenskyi was planned as a housing quarter, so what a visitor finds along Vulytsia Kostia Hordiienka is shops rather than hotels. The Shumenskyi market takes number 17. That street starts at provulok Molochna Balka, and five- and nine-storey blocks stand either side of it, the pattern the quarter was first built to before the towers went up.
Take a room in central Kherson and come out by road if you want the market, the library on Prospekt Sviatykh Kyryla ta Mefodiia, or the lyceum grounds on Poltavska Street.

What are the main landmarks in Shumenskyi?
Shumenskyi holds the Kherson regional library for youth, which was founded in 1980 at 14a Prospekt Sviatykh Kyryla ta Mefodiia and took Borys Lavrenov's name in 1991. Poltavska Street carries the older ground. At number 89 an eight-hectare park survives from the Kazennyi Sad, a garden planted on the edge of 18th-century Kherson, and it has been protected since 1964.
One pedunculate oak there is a natural monument in its own right. Shumenskyi Park serves the estates. A stela for the refinery workers killed in the Second World War stands at 52 Vulytsia Naftovykiv, put up in 1967.
What is the history of Shumenskyi?
Shumenskyi is named for Shumen, the Bulgarian city Kherson has been twinned with since 1962. Vulytsia Naftovykiv began to form in the 1930s alongside the Kherson oil refinery, whose plant reached full production in the 1950s, and Vulytsia Ivana Bohuna filled in after the Second World War with two- and three-storey houses for refinery workers. Nine-storey blocks and twelve-storey towers came later, beyond the Robocha Street crossing.
Poltavska Street is older still. The name goes back to the second half of the 19th century, decades before the refinery or the estates.
Where is Shumenskyi?
Shumenskyi lies at the western end of Kherson inside Korabelnyi Raion, with Poltavska Street running on from it into the neighbouring Sukharne quarter.
