Verkhnya Khortytsia keeps no lodging trade of its own, and a bed in this quarter would be a residential address rather than a visitor base. The Mädchenschule shows why. A Russian strike on 4 July 2026 brought down the left wing of that school at 18 vulytsia Abrahama Koopa, a building on the state register of architectural monuments since January 2022, and the money found in August 2026 covered emergency shoring rather than repair.
Foreign governments advise against all travel to Zaporizhzhya Oblast. Come by daylight if you come at all, and count on the city across the Dnieper for a room rather than on these streets.

The main landmarks in Verkhnya Khortytsia stand along vulytsia Abrahama Koopa and vulytsia Rosental, the two streets that still carry the Chortitza Colony. Its centrepiece is the Mädchenschule of 1904, two storeys of terracotta and pale beige brick in the modern style with late Baroque detail. Around it stand the Lehrerseminar, the Waltman castle, and the old volost office.
The Zaporizhzhia oak stands apart from them in a wooded balka in the northern part of the quarter, the oldest natural monument in the region at past seven hundred years. Its last living branch fell in June 2025. Saint Nicholas church serves the eastern streets.
What is the history of Verkhnya Khortytsia?
Verkhnya Khortytsia began as Chortitza, the first Mennonite settlement in the Russian Empire, laid out for families from the Vistula delta who came down the Dnieper in 1789 and chartered in 1790 by order of Grigory Potemkin. Jakob Höppner and Johann Bartsch had scouted the ground three years earlier. The village became the seat of the Chortitza Colony, and its schools trained the teachers who staffed German-language classrooms across the region.
In 1910 Petro Buzuk founded the Khortytsia Society of Nature Protectors in the girls' school, the first body of its kind in the empire. The German-Soviet war made the place the centre of the Khortytsia Gebiet. Zaporizhzhya absorbed the settlement in 1969.
Where is Verkhnya Khortytsia?
Verkhnya Khortytsia sits on the right bank of the Dnieper inside Dniprovskyi raion, above the Verkhnya Khortytsia river that drops through a chain of wooded balkas toward the channel. Despite the name, this ground is not on Khortytsia island: three right-bank streams face that island, Verkhnya, Serednia, and Nyzhnia Khortytsia, and the quarter took the name of the upper one. Its eastern streets reach vulytsia Pishchana, where the Osypenkivskyi microdistrict takes over.
