About Voznesenivskyi Raion

Where to stay in Voznesenivskyi Raion

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Voznesenivskyi Raion is where Zaporizhzhya keeps its oblast administration and its city council, so the beds near Sobornyi Avenue serve people with business at those desks. Zaporizhzhya has been a front-line city since Russia's full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022, and air-raid alerts run through the working day here. Rockets hit Yakova Novytskoho Street in 2022.

Foreign ministries have advised against all travel to Ukraine since the invasion began, and schools displaced from the occupied parts of Zaporizhzhya Oblast teach in the district. If you come, you come for work, and you pick a room by its shelter.

About Voznesenivskyi Raion

What are the main landmarks in Voznesenivskyi Raion?

Voznesenivskyi Raion sets its landmarks on two grounds, the city centre and an island. Sobornyi Avenue runs the length of that centre in Stalinist stone, past Festival Square, Maidan Heroiv, and the Krytyi Market. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Art Museum keeps Ukrainian folk decorative art at 76-B Nezalezhnoi Ukrainy Street, and the Zaporizhzhia Academic Youth Theatre and the Zaporizhzhia State Circus stand just north of it.

The state circus dates from 1972. Across the water, the Museum of the History of Zaporizhzhian Cossacks sits at the north end of Khortytsia inside the Khortytsia National Reserve.

What is the history of Voznesenivskyi Raion?

Voznesenivskyi Raion was created on 21 January 1939 as Ordzhonikidzevskyi Raion, and kept Sergo Ordzhonikidze's name until 19 February 2016. Retired soldiers of the Alexander Fortress settled the hill above the Dnieper, and the settlement was given the official name Voznesenka in 1795. The Church of the Ascension that the name honours opened on Voznesenska Hora in January 1823, and was pulled down in the 1950s as the city spread over it.

German forces held the district from 1941, and nearly all of Zaporizhzhya was destroyed between 1941 and 1943 before the Red Army retook it on 13 October 1943. Khortytsia joined the raion in 1995.

Where is Voznesenivskyi Raion?

Voznesenivskyi Raion holds the centre of Zaporizhzhya between the Dnieper and Oleksandrivskyi raion, and crosses the water westward to take in Khortytsia.
