Where to stay in Fort Smith

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

West Garrison Avenue Historic District is the obvious base. Its buildings hold the oldest commercial street the city kept, and a room in that quarter puts the Fort Smith Museum of History, the New Theatre and the Bonneville House within an easy walk. Belle Grove is the other half of it.

The Belle Grove Historic District carries the residential side of the same period, with the William Ayers House and the Ferguson-Calderara House among the addresses that survive there. Distances open up beyond those two. Fort Smith covers a very large area, so the Fishback Neighborhood Historic District, the May-Lecta-Sweet Historic District and the Fitzgerald Historic District work as separate destinations rather than as extensions of one walk.

Oklahoma is across the line. A traveller who finds Sebastian County full can look over the state border without adding much to the return drive, which makes the choice of side a practical question rather than a scenic one. Three burial grounds carry the record as directly as any building: the Fort Smith National Cemetery, Oak Cemetery and Elmwood Cemetery.

Saint Scholastica Convent and the Joseph Knoble Brewery are listed on their own, away from the district boundaries.

About Fort Smith

Historic districts run right through this city.

What is Fort Smith known for?

West Garrison Avenue Historic District, Belle Grove Historic District, the Fishback Neighborhood Historic District and the Fitzgerald Historic District each preserve a separate quarter, which is unusual density for a place of this size. The fort came first. Fort Smith began as a military post in 1817, and the Fort Smith National Cemetery and the Fort Smith Museum of History both carry that origin forward.

What are the main landmarks in Fort Smith?

The register runs long here. Four historic districts, West Garrison Avenue Historic District, Belle Grove Historic District, the May-Lecta-Sweet Historic District and the Fitzgerald Historic District, take in whole quarters at once. Single buildings fill the rest.

The Bonneville House, the William Ayers House, the Tillman Shaw House, the James Sparks House and the Horace Franklin Rogers House stand under family names, while Christ the King Church, the New Theatre and the Harold Adams Office Building cover the civic side.

What is the history of Fort Smith?

The city began as a fort in 1817. A military post on the Arkansas frontier gave Fort Smith both its name and its first street pattern, and the Fort Smith National Cemetery remains the plainest evidence of that founding purpose. Trade followed the garrison.

Garrison Avenue grew into the commercial spine now preserved as the West Garrison Avenue Historic District, and the Joseph Knoble Brewery survives from the working city that filled in behind it. Money built the neighbourhoods. Belle Grove Historic District, the Fishback Neighborhood Historic District and the May-Lecta-Sweet Historic District each record a phase of residential building, and the Bonneville House, the William Ayers House and the Ferguson-Calderara House are among the named survivals.

Institutions arrived alongside. Saint Scholastica Convent and Christ the King Church served the growing city, the New Theatre gave it a stage, and Oak Cemetery and Elmwood Cemetery date from the same expanding decades. The border never moved away.

Fort Smith stayed a Sebastian County seat on the Oklahoma line, which kept it a crossing point as much as a destination through every later stage of its growth.

Where is Fort Smith?

Fort Smith covers roughly one hundred and seventy-six square kilometres. The city occupies river valley ground with the Ouachita Mountains on one side and the Boston and Ozark mountains on the other, which is why the approaches climb whichever way a traveller comes in. Oklahoma begins at the city limit.

The state line runs along one edge, and the metropolitan area the city anchors reaches over it into Crawford, Franklin, LeFlore and Sequoyah counties.

What is the climate of Fort Smith?

The river valley traps the summer heat. Humid air settles between the Ouachita Mountains and the Ozark highlands, and July and August in Fort Smith run as heavy as anywhere in the state, which pushes most visitors indoors by the middle of the afternoon. Fort Smith's winter is a short season.

Cold comes and goes without settling for long, and the historic districts are at their most walkable in the weeks either side of it.

How do you get to Fort Smith?

Two states meet at this city. Fort Smith is reached by road from either the Arkansas or the Oklahoma side, and the metropolitan area it anchors takes in counties on both, so arrivals come from several directions at once. Garrison Avenue is the destination.

Almost everything a visitor comes for, the Fort Smith Museum of History, the New Theatre and the West Garrison Avenue Historic District, sits within a few blocks of that one street.
