Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Ortega has no lodging district of its own. The peninsula went up as single-family housing, and its whole commercial strip runs to a few blocks on Baltic Street near Corinthian Avenue. Roosevelt Boulevard carries U.S.
Route 17 through the middle of Ortega and over the Ortega River towards Riverside and Avondale, with the bigger hotels standing further northeast in downtown Jacksonville. A drawbridge crosses at Grand Avenue. You will want that corridor if you are driving, and the Avondale side if you would rather walk to dinner.

What are the main landmarks in Ortega?
Ortega keeps its landmarks on Baltic Street and Oxford Avenue. The Village Store went up at 4216 Oxford Avenue in 1923, a row of shopfronts turning the corner into Corinthian Avenue, and it reached the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Ortega Elementary School opened the same year at 4010 Baltic Street.
Four circular parks punctuate the plan, Bettes Park nearest the peninsula's tip, small roads striking out from each like spokes. Corinthian Avenue names a column order. Another stretch takes its street names from Native American peoples, among them Algonquin, Apache, Cherokee, and Iroquois avenues.
What is the history of Ortega?
Ortega began as an island plantation. Daniel McGirtt left his name on McGirts Boulevard and on McGirt's Creek, the older name for the Ortega River. Senator Wilkinson Call bought the peninsula in 1902 with money borrowed from J. P. Morgan, and sold out to John N. C. Stockton four years later.
Stockton's Ortega Company threw a wooden bridge over the Ortega River in 1908, and a streetcar line ran across it into the new subdivision. A bascule bridge replaced it in 1927. The National Register listed Old Ortega and its 597 contributing buildings on July 14, 2004.
