Springfield is a residential grid of narrow lots, and what lodging it has clusters along the two commercial strips rather than among the houses. Main Street and Eighth Street cross at the middle of the district, and the two commercial corridors run out from that junction. Stay near Main and Eighth. Downtown Jacksonville is the other option if you want museums and a ballgame, a few blocks south across Hogans Creek, with Henry J. Klutho Park and Springfield Park lining the walk between the two.

What are the main landmarks in Springfield?
Springfield's landmarks are domestic rather than monumental, and most of them carry Henry John Klutho's name. The Henry John Klutho House stands on West 9th Street, moved there in 1925 from a lot on Main Street, with Klutho Apartments on the same street. Springfield Park opened in 1907.
Henry J. Klutho Park continues the same strip west along the southern edge, beside Hogans Creek and its balustraded bridges, which Klutho designed in 1929. A columned church of 1921 at 101 West 1st Street, built for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, marks the entrance from downtown.
What is the history of Springfield?
Springfield takes its name from a spring of good water in a field, ground that West 4th Street now crosses. C. L. Robinson attached the name in 1869, and J. H. Norton advertised a Springfield Suburb in an 1871 trade circular before the Springfield Company platted the blocks in 1882. Springfield escaped the 1901 fire.
The Great Fire burned 146 city blocks of Jacksonville in eight hours, and Hogans Creek held it at the southern edge, so families burned out downtown rebuilt on this bank. Camp Cuba Libre had filled the same streets in 1898, when Fitzhugh Lee's Seventh Corps mustered here.
