Main Street settles most of it. Rooms within reach of the boardwalk put the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site, Old City Hall and Stone Row inside one walk, which is the whole reason to stay in Saint Charles rather than Saint Louis. The river is right there.
The Missouri runs past the foot of the district, and the ground between water and street is where the town began. Frenchtown Historic District lies just beyond the main run. Its streets carry the name of the French settlement and a quieter set of addresses, which suits anyone who would rather sleep away from the evening trade on the boardwalk.
Two more districts sit inland. Midtown Neighborhood Historic District and Lindenwood Neighborhood Historic District hold residential ground away from the water, where the streets are ordinary and the nights quieter for it. Saint Louis changes the calculation.
The bigger city lies about twenty miles off, so a traveller can base in Saint Charles for the river and the historic streets and still reach whatever brought them to the region. If you want the boardwalk and the gas lights, take a Main Street address; if you want quiet, Frenchtown Historic District is the better bet.

Saint Charles dates from 1765. The settlement grew on the bank of the Missouri River near its mouth at the Mississippi, on ground within the Louisiana Territory that Lewis and Clark later set out to explore. Their expedition stopped here early.
Saint Charles was among the first calls on that journey, and it became the first state capital of Missouri when the state took its own government. The capitol survives. The First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site holds that chapter, and the African Church records a separate strand of the same century.
Restoration shaped what a visitor sees. Main Street was taken back to its 1812 appearance, gas lights and boardwalk included, and the shops along it deal in handicrafts, home decorations and antiques. Districts followed the same logic.

Two rivers set the frame. Saint Charles stands on the Missouri River near its mouth at the Mississippi, about twenty miles northwest of Saint Louis, and the county it heads carries the town's name. The city covers little ground.
Rather more than sixty square kilometres hold the whole of it, which keeps Frenchtown Historic District, Main Street and the Lou Brock Sports Complex within a short drive of one another.
What is the climate of Saint Charles?
The rivers do the work here. Damp air off the Missouri River and the Mississippi keeps the summer heavy in Saint Charles, and the boardwalk on Main Street is at its best in the weeks either side of it. The town sits in the temperate band.
Cold reaches it in winter without any sea to soften the swing, so the gas lights and shop windows carry the darker months more than the river does.
How do you get to Saint Charles?
Saint Louis is the way in. Saint Charles lies about twenty miles northwest of Saint Louis, and most arrivals come through the larger city before finishing the run by road. Main Street rewards walking after that.
The restored blocks, Old City Hall and the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site sit close enough together that a car parked once can stay parked for the day.
