Saint Joseph dates from 1843. The town grew on the Missouri River as a jumping-off point, and wagons on the Oregon Trail left from it while Buchanan County filled in behind. The Pony Express followed.
Its headquarters stood in Saint Joseph, which put the city at one end of a route whose name has outlasted almost everything else raised here in the same decade. Jesse James died here. He was shot in the house the Jesse James Home Museum occupies, and the killing fixed the city in a story it has never entirely put down.
Institutions came with the century that followed. The Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the Isaac Miller House survive from the building years, and the Glore Psychiatric Museum records an institutional history most cities keep quieter. Confectionery made a smaller name.
Cherry Mash came out of Saint Joseph, and the sweet still carries the city's name beyond Buchanan County. The metropolitan area reaches into two states.
