What is the history of Camden?
Settlement on this bank dates to 1626. The east side of the Delaware River carried farms and landings long before a city took shape, and Camden grew as the crossing point opposite Philadelphia rather than as a place travellers sought out. Incorporation came in 1828, formalising a settlement that had been there for two centuries.
Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, gave the city its name, and Camden County was carved out in 1844 with Camden as its seat. Manufacturing shaped the city that followed. Factories and shipyards along the Delaware River turned Camden into a boom-town whose work drew people into more than twenty neighbourhoods packed between the water and the county line.
Then the plants shut. Hard times followed the closures, and the same waterfront that had built Camden was left with empty ground where the works had stood. USS New Jersey came back to that ground as the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial, and the ship anchors the stretch of river frontage the city has rebuilt for visitors.
Camden remains the seat of Camden County and part of the South Jersey region within the Delaware Valley.
