East Falls began as a settlement beside the river falls that gave it a name, on the outer ground of Philadelphia. Historic RittenhouseTown recalls the earliest settlement here, well before the rowhouses arrived. Water powered the first works.
The Falls of the Schuylkill were drowned in 1822 by the Schuylkill Canal and Fairmount Water Works projects, and the cataracts the district was named for have stayed under water since. The district later filled with houses and playing fields such as Ravenhill Athletic Field as the city reached upstream.
