Northern Liberties took its name from the liberty lands that lay just beyond the original bounds of Philadelphia. For years it stood as a separate district beyond the northern edge of the colonial city, holding its own churches and street grid before the expanding town finally absorbed it whole. Saint Augustine Church and the National Shrine of Saint John Neumann survive from that churchgoing past.
