Where to stay in Farhod

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Farhod keeps no hotel of its own. The beds for this side of Samarkand are in the old city, back down the M39, which skirts the settlement's southern edge on its way northeast. What Farhod holds instead is working fabric: apartment blocks in rows, a school, a clinic, and the Samarkand cigarette factory that the housing wraps on three sides.

Jomboy, three kilometres east, has the nearest station, on the Samarkand to Jizzakh railway. It suits you if standing at the fork of the Zarafshon is worth more to you than a choice of rooms.

About Farhod

What are the main landmarks in Farhod?

Farhod carries no monument. The Samarkand cigarette factory is the largest thing standing inside the settlement, and the apartment blocks close around it on three sides, which is as near to a centre as Farhod has. School No. 57 and the settlement clinic are the other fixed points.

The mazar of Chupan-Ata, built in the fifteenth century, crowns the upland a few kilometres west, outside the settlement, and the Registan and Shah-i-Zinda of Samarkand lie well beyond that, in the old city.

What is the history of Farhod?

Farhod was built, not grown. The settlement took urban-type status in 1981, late in the Soviet decades, and its plan still reads that way: apartment blocks in rows, a school, a clinic, and a pharmacy set among the plants beside them. Its industry stands inside the settlement rather than beyond it, and the tobacco and textile plants were both set up as joint ventures, with British, American and Turkish partners.

Its address is the odder fact. Farhod answers to the city council of Samarkand rather than to the rural district that surrounds it, and the arrangement has held ever since.

Where is Farhod?

Farhod lies northeast of Samarkand, east of the Chupan-Ata upland, with Jomboy three kilometres on and the Zarafshon dividing at its western edge.
