About Former Region 3 (Johannesburg)

What are the main landmarks in Former Region 3 (Johannesburg)?

Sandton defined this district. The formerly independent municipality of Sandton sat at the heart of Former Region 3, giving the northern suburbs of Johannesburg their commercial anchor and their name. Around it the region reached toward Northcliff and Roodepoort in the west, Midrand and Diepsloot in the north, and Alexandra along its eastern seam.

Those bordering names still mark how the district was drawn.

What is the history of Former Region 3 (Johannesburg)?

The lines came in 2000. Former Region 3 was drawn that year as one administrative slice of the City of Johannesburg, and it swallowed the once-independent municipality of Sandton along with a spread of northern suburbs. Also called the Sandton region, it lasted six years.

A 2006 reshuffle of Johannesburg's regions abolished it and redrew the map that had briefly given Sandton its own numbered district.
