Vagharshapat, still widely called Echmiadzin, holds the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and its cathedral, a short run west of Yerevan.

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Most beds for this city are in Yerevan. The run out is short enough that a great many people who come to see Etchmiadzin Cathedral sleep in the capital, take the road west in the morning and are back the same evening. Staying in Vagharshapat itself buys something else: the churches at first light and last light, before and after the coaches.
Guesthouses take most of that trade. The list is short, and it sits close to the cathedral precinct rather than spread across the town, so the walk to Saint Gayane Church or Saint Hripsime Church is a matter of minutes. Signs still read Echmiadzin. Ashtarak is the other option.
It stands north of the plain, and a car based there reaches the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the higher ground of Aragatsotn without doubling back through the capital. Masis, south-east across the fields, does the same job from the far side. Neither has what this town has after dark, when the day traffic from Yerevan has gone and the cathedral grounds belong to whoever is still standing in them. Weather decides more than the address.
The Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum and the Ruben Sevak Museum will fill an afternoon that the open ground around Zvartnots will not, and both are a short walk from where the rooms are.
About Vagharshapat
Churches account for most of it.
What is Vagharshapat known for?
Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the one most visitors come for, and the Museum of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin sets out what the compound around it has gathered over the centuries. Saint Gayane Church and Saint Hripsime Church stand apart from it, each on its own ground near the edge of the built-up area. Shoghakat Church makes the fourth.
On the Yerevan side of town the ruin of Zvartnots lies in open field, and that is the other thing people drive out to see.
What are the main landmarks in Vagharshapat?
Four churches and one ruin make the roll. Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the one the others are measured against, and Saint Hripsime Church, Saint Gayane Church and Shoghakat Church stand around it within walking distance. Zvartnots sits out on the Yerevan side, alone in open ground.
Museums fill the rest. The Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum, the Khoren Ter-Harutyan Museum and the House-museum of Hovhannes Hovhannisyan are scattered through the streets, and the Armenian Genocide memorial stands with the cathedral.
What is the history of Vagharshapat?
The name changed back in 1995. Վաղարշապատ is the older form, and making it official again did not stop anyone using Էջմիածին, which is what the cathedral is called and therefore what most people still say. Both names run in parallel. The Russian form, Вагаршапат, sits in the record beside them, and a visitor reading signs, tickets and older maps will meet all three without much warning.
Zvartnots came down long ago. What is left of it stands on the Yerevan side of the built-up area, and its survival as a ruin rather than as a working church marks how much of this ground has been made and unmade more than once. Through all of that the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin stayed put.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the seat of the Armenian church, and the Museum of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin holds what centuries in that role have gathered. Two of the museums keep a nearer past. The Ruben Sevak Museum and the Armenian Genocide memorial both stand here, and the house where Hovhannes Hovhannisyan lived is kept as the House-museum of Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.
A town this size holding that many museums is unusual, and the reason is the one that brought the churches: the see rather than the market.
Where is Vagharshapat?
Flat ground, and not much of it. The whole of the built-up area is small enough to cross on foot, which puts every church within a walk of every other, and the fields begin immediately past the last street. Yerevan lies east.
Ashtarak sits north, Masis south-east across the plain, and the rest of Armavir spreads west, while the higher ground of Aragatsotn rises behind it.
What is the climate of Vagharshapat?
The mountains do the work here. Ranges stand between this plain and every sea, so the air reaching Vagharshapat has already been wrung dry, and the swing between the hottest afternoon and the coldest night runs wide in both directions. Summer is long and hard.
Heat sits on the open ground from June into September with very little cloud, and the stone interiors of the churches are the coolest places to stand. Winter brings frost and thin snow off the highlands of Aragatsotn.
How do you get to Vagharshapat?
Everything comes through Yerevan. The road west out of the capital reaches the edge of Vagharshapat in well under an hour, and shared minibuses work it through the day rather than to a timetable worth planning around. Ashtarak is the other approach.
Coming from the north, the route drops off the higher ground of Aragatsotn and crosses the plain, and drivers carrying on towards Masis pass the ruin of Zvartnots on the way. Signposts still read Echmiadzin.
