The charter year is 1194. Wiener Neustadt was laid out as a fortified town on the southern approach to Vienna, and Burg Wiener Neustadt at the edge of it is the surviving physical argument for why anyone founded a town on this stretch of plain at all. Churches followed the fortress.
Neukloster Monastery and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary and St. Rupert carried the ecclesiastical weight of the medieval city between them, and the Deutschordenskommende Wiener Neustadt marks where the Teutonic Order held ground of its own. Later reigns left themselves in bronze. The Maria Theresa monument and the Denkmal Kaiser Franz Joseph I. name the two rulers the city chose to keep in public, and a separate memorial records 250 years of the Theresian Military Academy that carries her name.
Industry came next. The locomotive Fanny survives from the century of workshops, and the Industrieviertel-Museum keeps the wider record of the manufacturing belt of Niederösterreich that Wiener Neustadt sits inside. Vienna is the hinge. The corridor running south out of the capital passes straight through Wiener Neustadt, which is why a stay here works as a base for the southern half of the Vienna region rather than as a detour from it. West of the city the ground climbs into the foothills of the Alps, while east of it the way runs flat to the Neusiedler See and on into Hungary.
