What are the main landmarks in Pöstlingberg?
The pilgrimage church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, the Wallfahrtskirche zu den Sieben Schmerzen Mariä, stands with the Grottenbahn am Pöstlingberg beside it and the Denkmal für die Vertriebenen a short walk away. Fritz Hessemer, a Munich architect, designed the Villa Schöfdoppler-Casagrande at Am Pöstlingberg 11. The old municipal office of 1903 in Samhaberstraße now houses the fire brigade.
What is the history of Pöstlingberg?
The name first appears in 1669, as Pößlingberg, on Georg Matthäus Vischer's map of Upper Austria. The parish followed in 1785. In 1875 Lichtenberg was merged into the municipality.
Its last mayor, Johann Schöfdoppler, a grocer and postcard publisher, founded the fire brigade and had a villa built in 1901. Pöstlingberg joined Urfahr on 31 May 1919. Urfahr became part of Linz the next day, and Lichtenberg went its own way again.
