About Freinberg

What are the main landmarks in Freinberg?

Churches crowd this hill. The New Cathedral, the Martinskirche, the Kalvarienbergkirche, the Kapuzinerkirche Sankt Matthias and the Maximilian-Kirche all fall inside the Freinberg listing, alongside the Jesuitenkloster and a Capuchin monastery. Secular markers follow: the Franz-Josef-Warte, the Keplerdenkmal, the Hessendenkmal and the Rosenburg.

The Botanischer Garten, the Naturkundliche Station der Stadt Linz and the Schlossmuseum des Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseums round out what the hill carries.

What is the history of Freinberg?

Names changed on this hill. The plateau and the forested ridge to the south were historically known by other names, among them Galgenberg and Jägermayrwald, before Freinberg settled as the one attached to the mountain inside Linz. Older institutions sit in that record too, the Jesuitenkloster and the Capuchin monastery among them, and the Gedenkstätte für das KZ Linz II records a concentration camp of the same name.

Where is Freinberg?

The mountain reaches 405 metres above sea level, and the forested ridge running south of the plateau was once called Jägermayrwald.
