Donaustadt spreads its landmarks wide across the plain. The Donauturm rises highest, a slender tower over the Donaupark, while the Vienna International Centre lines the river with its curved office slabs. Along the Alte Donau, much of what follows takes shape.
The Gänsehäufel bathing island sits on the Alte Donau, and the Löwe von Aspern, a stone lion, marks a field where armies once clashed. Older villages left the Schloss Essling and the Schloss Hirschstetten behind.
What is the history of Donaustadt?
Donaustadt was farmland and river marsh long before it was a district, a scatter of villages on the plain across the Danube. Schloss Essling and Schloss Hirschstetten date from those manorial days. The Löwe von Aspern still recalls a battle fought over this open ground.
Vienna reached the far bank only in the twentieth century, when the Vienna International Centre and the towers of Donau City rose on the drained land.
