Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, Antwerp — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, or Bezali, is the Antwerp district where three old towns line the seaport docks in Flanders, Belgium.
About Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo

Where to stay in Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Bezali is thin on beds. Berendrecht and Zandvliet keep the district's two village cores, each a compact cluster of streets set back from the seaport docks, and they are where any stay in Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo begins. Lillo lies further out along the water. Antwerp itself holds nearly all the rooms, a short run south of the docks, so most travellers sleep in the city and drive north to Berendrecht for the Kapel van de Hagelberg and the open ground. Choose Bezali if you want dock horizons over street life.
About Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo
What are the main landmarks in Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo?
One chapel carries the district. The Kapel van de Hagelberg is the only named landmark in Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, a small chapel that belongs to the village side of the district rather than to the working port beside it. Everything else here is dockland: the seaport docks running north from the old city of Antwerp took the ground between Berendrecht, Zandvliet and Lillo, and the three kept little more than their own street grids.
Sightseeing is a short list.
What is the history of Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo?
Three villages, one district. Berendrecht, Zandvliet and Lillo stood as separate municipalities until the substantial merger of 1983 folded them, with other former communes, into an enlarged Antwerp. Decentralisation followed in 2000.
The enlarged city was cut into districts, and the three towns north of the old centre were bundled together as Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, a name long enough that Bezali became the everyday shorthand.
Where is Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo?
Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo spreads across some 52 square kilometres of village land and seaport docks north of the old city of Antwerp, in Flanders.
