Beds cluster along the Leien and on the streets running back towards De Coninckplein, which puts trams, the diamantwijk and the whole intercity network within a few minutes of the front door. Antwerp Zoo is the near neighbour. The old centre across the Leien is quieter and prettier, so the trade is a shorter walk to a platform against a shorter walk to Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. Antwerp Zoo shares its wall with the station, and its gate opens straight onto the quarter, making it the one major attraction that sits inside the Statiekwartier rather than beyond it. Aquatopia faces the same forecourt. The rest of Antwerp's museums and churches stand past the Leien: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, Rubenshuis, Museum Plantin-Moretus, and, out at the water, Het Steen alongside the Museum aan de Stroom.
What is the history of Statiekwartier?
The quarter took its name from Centraal Station, in the older Flemish word for a railway stop, and it has never carried an official one of its own. Statiekwartier is a habit, not a decree. Its edges come from the traffic around them: Centraal Station on one side, the Leien on another, De Coninckplein at one corner and the diamantwijk pressed hard against the tracks.
That last neighbour shaped the streets as much as the trains did, because the diamond trade settled beside the platforms and never moved.
