The parish came before the neighbourhood. Brotas survives as the remnant of a freguesia that ranked among the largest in the old scheme by which Salvador divided itself, and the sub-neighbourhoods inside its boundary are what that inheritance left behind. Bahia's capital has since redrawn its administrative map.
Growth filled the western zone with housing. Nordeste Linhas Aéreas Regionais, an airline of the region, kept its headquarters in Brotas for as long as it flew.
