Costa Azul, Salvador — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Costa Azul is the Salvador bairro of Praia de Jardim de Alah and Parque Costa Azul, on the coast north-east of Pituba.

About Costa Azul

Where to stay in Costa Azul

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Avenida Otávio Mangabeira carries the shore road past Praia de Jardim de Alah, and Avenida Professor Magalhães Neto comes down off the Pituba boundary to meet it. Parque Costa Azul fills the block behind. A room in Costa Azul sits inside that corner, with the shops of Pituba one avenue over, the STIEP side inland, and Boca do Rio further along the coast.

Book here if you want the beach and the park within a walk, not the colonial centre of Salvador.

About Costa Azul

What are the main landmarks in Costa Azul?

Costa Azul holds two named sights. Praia de Jardim de Alah is the bairro's own stretch of coast, reached from Avenida Otávio Mangabeira and running between the sand of Jardim dos Namorados and Praia de Armação, which belongs to Jardim Armação next door. Parque Costa Azul opened in 1995.

It covers 55,000 square metres beside the Rio Camarajipe, on the ground where the ruins of the Clube Costa Azul stood, the social club whose name the bairro carries.

What is the history of Costa Azul?

Costa Azul was part of Pituba until 1974. The shore here was called praia do Chega Nego before that, a name the record ties to the landing of enslaved Africans put ashore by the Portuguese on this stretch. Clube Costa Azul supplied the name.

Owners in the Edifício Pedra de Allah I, on the street then called Rua dos Maçons and now Rua Dr. Boureau, met early in 1974 to agree a shorter name for their post, and settled on that of the social club already standing nearby. Gilberto Gil lived on Rua Vicente Batalha.

Where is Costa Azul?

The Rio Camarajipe marks the Pituba flank. Costa Azul carries the coast on from there to Boca do Rio, with STIEP inland and Praia de Jardim de Alah at the foot.
