Periperi is a working suburb by the sea rather than a resort, though it was a resort once. Its localities run from the rua dos Coqueiros through Malhada, Bariri, Nova Constituinte, and Beira Rio, and Praia Grande adjoins it to the south with Coutos north. Sundays are the reason to be here.

The Sport Club of Periperi is the bairro's largest gathering place, and Sundays there run to pagode, seresta, and drumming on the beach. Ara Ketu was founded here in 1980, and the bloco afro took the neighbourhood's name out into the world on an album called De Periperi. The Colégio Estadual Nelson Mandela dates from 1967.

What is the history of Periperi?
Tupinambá people were here first. The name itself is old Tupi, piripiri, a kind of rush, which the town of Piripiri in Piauí carries with a different spelling and the same sound. Farms covered the ground through the nineteenth century, and in the twentieth Periperi became a place for summering and for retirement by the sea, until industrial complexes and the Avenida Afrânio Peixoto arrived in 1971 and brought far more people to a bairro built for fewer.
Where is Periperi?
Periperi lies in the Subúrbio Ferroviário, the railway suburb strung along the bay north of central Salvador, with Coutos bounding it north, Fazenda Coutos north-east, Rio Sena south-east, and Praia Grande to the south. The shore is what shaped it. The beach is still where the bairro gathers.
