Proximity is worth paying for. The old railway ground gives a quieter alternative a little out from the fair. Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Caruaru still stands, with the Armazém da Antiga Estação Ferroviária and the Pátio da Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Caruaru alongside it, and the Museu do Forró Luiz Gonzaga occupies the same preserved complex.
Music runs late in June. Anyone booking for São João should treat the whole city as one venue, since the festivities spread far beyond any single square and the beds nearest the centre go first. Recife is close enough to change the calculation.
The state capital lies some 130 kilometres away, and a fair number of visitors treat Caruaru as a day out from the coast rather than a place to sleep, which suits you only if the fair is the sole objective. Staying overnight buys the evening. The Casa-Museu Mestre Vitalino and the Rádio Difusora de Caruaru are not things a coach party reaches, and the interior of Pernambuco looks different once the day-trippers have gone.

Law caught up with Caruaru in 1849. A market town does not need a charter to exist, and the Feira de Caruaru is the institution that explains why anything grew on this stretch of the Pernambuco interior at all. Trade needed a meeting point.
The Memorial da Cidade de Caruaru holds what the town chose to remember of that. Clay turned a local craft into the city's signature. Mestre Vitalino gave the figures a name, and the Casa-Museu Mestre Vitalino, the Obra do Mestre Vitalino, and the Museu do Barro de Caruaru now carry three versions of one inheritance.
Forró took the sound side. The Museu do Forró Luiz Gonzaga attaches to another name out of the same country, while the Rádio Difusora de Caruaru records the broadcasting side of the same century. The railway arrived and then withdrew, leaving the Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Caruaru, the Armazém da Antiga Estação Ferroviária, and the Pátio da Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Caruaru standing as heritage rather than as infrastructure.
Recife stayed the capital. Caruaru grew instead into one of the larger cities of the interior, measured against Feira de Santana, Campina Grande, and Petrolina rather than against the coast. June sealed the reputation.

Caruaru lies inland, west of Recife and about 130 kilometres from it. The municipality covers a wide slice of the Pernambuco interior, though only a small fraction of that ground is built up, which is why the city reads as compact while the territory around it does not. Open country starts quickly.
