About Zürich (Kreis 5)
What are the main landmarks in Zürich (Kreis 5)?
Kreis 5's old works have new uses. The former drinking-water filter plant houses the Museum of Design, an engineering works gave way to the Schauspielhaus and flats, and the Maag gear factory to the Prime Tower and the Maag-Areal. Zürich's university of the arts, the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, is in the district as well.
The Johanneskirche on the Limmatstrasse went up in 1897-98 to plans by Paul Reber, and its organ, built by Th. Kuhn in 1898, is one of the oldest in Zürich.
What is the history of Zürich (Kreis 5)?
Kreis 5 began as part of Aussersihl, which split from Wiedikon on 27 March 1787. In 1847 the Nordbahn, nicknamed the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn, cut the municipality in two, and its one crossing, on the Langstrasse, came to have more than ten barriers. Bankrupt, Aussersihl joined Zürich in 1893.
In 1913 the old Kreis III was split into Kreise 3, 4 and 5, and the Industriequartier north of the tracks became Kreis 5. It lost the still unbuilt Grünau to Altstetten in 1934.

Kreis 5 runs along the Limmat, its northern edge, from the Mittlerer Kräuel to the Hardegg, with the track field of the station approach and goods yards to the south.
