What is the history of Huangshan?
Huangshan is a land of holy peaks and rich merchants. For ages the Yellow Mountains drew painters, poets, and pilgrims, who climbed among the granite spires and pines and made the peaks a wonder of Chinese art. The valleys bred a famous merchant class.
The traders of old Huizhou grew wealthy across the empire, dealing in salt, tea, and timber, and they sent their riches home to build fine villages in the hills. Those merchants built to last and to honour. They raised white-walled halls, ancestral shrines, and carved stone archways in villages like Xidi and Hongcun, laid out around ponds and streams by the rules of the old geomancers.
The old Huizhou ways lived on in the stone. Long after the merchants were gone, the villages kept their carved beams and quiet lanes, and the mountains kept their fame. The peaks still rise in cloud above the town.

Huangshan lies in the mountains of southern Anhui in eastern China. The city sits in a green river valley below the Yellow Mountains, among steep forested hills and terraced fields, near the borders with Zhejiang and Jiangxi. Granite peaks rise to the north.

How do you get to Huangshan?
