What are the main landmarks in Fuling District?

The river holds the district's greatest sight. White Crane Ridge, a sandstone bar in the Yangtze inscribed with more than a thousand years of water-level marks, now sits below the reservoir and is read through the descending galleries of the Baiheliang Underwater Museum. On the slopes above, Yangtze Normal University keeps the borough's schoolrooms, while the towering Caijiagou Bridge carries the Chongqing-Lichuan railway over a deep gorge on the district's edge.

Fuling Zhacai, the salted mustard tuber cured along the Wu River, remains the name most travellers know before they arrive. Much waits along the banks.

What is the history of Fuling District?

The rivers wrote the record first. Carvers began cutting fish and water-level lines into White Crane Ridge in the Tang dynasty, leaving a hydrological archive along the Yangtze that reaches back more than twelve centuries before the Three Gorges reservoir sealed it beneath the Baiheliang Underwater Museum. Fuling District rose to a county-level city in 1983 and took its present form as a borough of Chongqing in 1997.

Along the Wu River the curing of Fuling Zhacai grew from a household craft into the trade that carried the district's name far beyond the gorges. The water kept the ledger.
