About Jiangbei District

Where to stay in Jiangbei District

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Most travellers base themselves around Guanyinqiao, the long pedestrian street that anchors the district's shopping and hotpot scene. Stay there for the crowds. Higher-end towers rise at Jiangbeizui, the financial quarter that steps down toward the point where the Jialing River folds into the Yangtze, and quieter rooms wait east along the Cuntan waterfront.

Views change with the block. Pick to taste.

About Jiangbei District

What are the main landmarks in Jiangbei District?

Guanyinqiao sets the tone. Its pedestrian street runs three thousand metres of shopfronts and screens. Down at Jiangbeizui, the CBD towers rise over the riverfront park that faces the Chongqing docks across the water, while the green Jialing River and the muddier Yangtze braid together at the district's southern tip.

Two Chongqing museums lie a short crossing away. The Three Gorges Museum keeps the region's river relics, and the Stilwell Museum holds the wartime record of the city.

What is the history of Jiangbei District?

Jiangbei District took its modern shape in 1933. The name means north of the river. Facing the old walled town of Chongqing across the water, the district grew from riverside wharves and warehouses into the commercial ground that Guanyinqiao now marks, its fortunes tied to the traffic on the Jialing River.

Trade came by water first. Later the metro pulled the crowds inland from the Yangtze quays.

Where is Jiangbei District?

江北区 runs along the north bank of the Jialing River, reaching the tip where its green water joins the Yangtze below the Jiangbeizui towers. Two rivers frame the borough.
